Laurel Sherrie
I've been an artist for as long as I can remember. I grew up in a suburb of Chicago and majored in Art at Eastern Illinois University. Later I worked as a graphic designer, then started painting in oils again in 1987. I have studied intensively on my own and gleaned knowledge from workshops. The writings of L. Ron Hubbard’s on Art have also been very helpful.
On a personal level, I married Bob Harvey in 1983 in Los Angeles. We moved to Santa Barbara then Ventura and settled in Arroyo Grande on the Central Coast of California. We live in the country with our Border Collies, parrot, parakeet, exotic finches and tortoises, and now we even have chickens.
In regards to my painting, major influences have been French Impressionists (Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Pissarro) and early 19th century California Plein-Air* painters (Edgar Payne, Sam Hyde and others). I keep studying and learning. I have done workshops with Ted Goerschner and Joyce Pike, signature members of Oil Painters of America. I began plein-air painting during Ted’s workshop and "inherited" his well-used French easel.
I have lived in California since 1969 and have traveled around the US, Central America, Europe, South Africa and Australia. I love California, such an unlimited resource for the landscapes and plein-air painting I love to do.
I have exhibited my work since 1990 in Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo County. I'm a member of the San Luis Obispo Art Association, El Camino Art Association and Oil Painters of America. I welcome commissions and have done commissions of residences, landscapes and commercial installations.
