Michael Hall

"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard."
Psalms 19: 1-3

Everything is Spiritual, both the seen and unseen. I attempt to convey symbolic spiritual qualities in terms of texture, color and shape, to give the viewer a physical link to a form that is real, but not necessarily seen with the physical eyes. The purpose of my work is to reveal the spiritual aspect of life, and to provoke thought and emotional response in the viewer. I paint alla prima (Italian for "first time"), also known as direct painting or premier coup painting, a technique in which the final surface of a painting is completed in one sitting, without under painting. My painting style is best classified as visionary art.

"Art of the Visionary attempts to show what lies beyond the boundary of our sight. Through dream, trance, or other altered states, the artist attempts to see the unseen - attaining a visionary state that transcends our regular modes of perception. The task awaiting him, thereafter, is to communicate his vision in a form recognizable to 'everyday sight'."
- L. Caruana
Manifesto of Visionary Art

Vision is the art of seeing things invisible."
-Jonathan Swift

As my painting has matured, I have succeeded in merging the natural forms of the physical world and the imagery of the unseen spiritual world into an indivisible whole, through the use of vibrant colors and organic forms. Although the process is frustrating and requires reworking the concepts through countless trials, the final product is rewarding.

My inspirations and artistic influences are many and varied: The Bible and the Holy Spirit, Music (all styles: from Metal to Classical), and Numerous Artists: Andrew Gonzalez, Bill Cumming, Maxfield Parish, Salvador Dali, Hieronymus Bosch, Christophe Vacher, Robert Venosa, Zdzislaw Beksinski, Wayne D. Barlowe, De Es Schwertberger, Alex Grey, Jon Foster, Phil Hale and William Blake.
